Independent diamond mining group Petra Diamonds has recovered a 41.82 carat diamond at the Cullinan Mine in South Africa. A Type IIb blue diamond, the rare stone could fetch up to $40 million at auction, underscoring the mine’s status as a home of rare and highly-valuable stones.
Among the rarest in nature, Type IIb stones account for less than 01% of natural diamonds worldwide. Petra Diamond is currently in the process of analyzing and ascertaining the preferred method of the sale, with further announcements regarding marketing expected in due course.
The Cullinan Mine is one of South Africa’s most historic as well as the source of the world’s largest diamond ever discovered – the Cullinan Diamond in 1905. Its recent discovery affirms the mine’s potential as well as South Africa’s status as a global diamond hub.
