An influx of lab-grown diamonds in the jewellery market over the past 10 years has sparked a curious, and complicated, choice for consumers: should you buy natural or man-made?
The question might seem frivolous, but it carries an awful lot of weight (or, indeed, carats). The natural diamond – or mined stones – market is worth about $US47 billion ($72 billion) globally, according to industry analyst Paul Zimnisky. He estimates that synthetic or lab-grown diamond jewellery is “now a $US35 billion to $40 billion industry, up from less than a billion in 2015”.
